Kaern Institute
A full university — degree programmes, faculties and research — built as one campus. The buildings are themselves a circular system, and a live case study in what they teach.
Enter the University →One name. One core. Three institutions, one offering. Kaern designs schools, a university and hospitals as a single architectural thesis — buildings that lower cortisol and give back more than they take — and lends the same method as Consulting on projects we don't design ourselves.
A space is never just a container. It is a biological extension of the human nervous system — and a participant in the living system of the planet. Kaern designs for both at once.
Light, acoustics, geometry and material are levers on cortisol, attention and recovery. Biophilic integration and rhythmic spatial flow, used deliberately to lower stress and sharpen the mind.
Restorative for the person
The same building gives back more than it takes — in energy, water, material and lifecycle. Sustainability designed in from the first day, not bolted on at the end.
Restorative for the planet
An institution that answers only one of them is incomplete. A hospital that lowers cortisol but wastes its resources is half-designed. A school that is carbon-neutral but cognitively hostile is half-designed. Kaern builds for the whole.
We bridge the ancient wisdom of Moroccan courtyards with rigorous modern ecology. Three permanent arms — Institute, Schools, Health — apply the dual thesis to rooms we build ourselves. Consulting lends the same method to the rooms you are building.
A full university — degree programmes, faculties and research — built as one campus. The buildings are themselves a circular system, and a live case study in what they teach.
Enter the University →Environments tuned with light, acoustics and biophilic design to lower childhood stress and support developing minds.
Enter the Schools →The clearest expression of the thesis — engineered to reduce cortisol, speed recovery, and to give back more than it takes.
Enter Health →The method, applied to your room. We work with institutions building their own schools, campuses and clinics — lending the dual thesis without taking the project over.
Enter Consulting →Five repeatable levers we tune on every project, in every arm. Read the deep version in the Held Core.
Proportion, sightlines and spatial flow chosen for tranquility and clarity — guiding people calmly through the building.
Natural light prioritised; circadian-aware artificial lighting. Light is something the body needs, treated as carefully as material.
Sound is designed, not left to chance — tuned to reduce the stress load that noise places on the body and the developing nervous system.
Tadelakt plaster and acoustic organic fibres replace harsh reverberations with a monastic, grounding quiet.
Living systems, natural material, and views of nature — used as regulators of stress and attention, not decoration.
The building gives back more than it takes — energy, water, material, lifecycle. Sustainability is the structural premise, not a finishing layer.
Every commission, regardless of arm, walks through the same four stages. The pace is deliberate.
With the client, the land, the prevailing wind. A Kaern brief takes weeks — sometimes months — and ends not with a list of rooms but with a single sentence describing how the building should feel.
Every stone, plank and pigment is traced. We favour materials harvested or quarried inside a 200 km radius — not as orthodoxy but because nearness allows accountability.
Lime is mixed on site. Joints are cut by people who will see the finished room. We schedule for weather, for craftsmen's children, for the season the timber prefers. The slowness is the point.
Kaern projects are not delivered and abandoned. We return seasonally for the first five years — to re-lime, to re-oil, to learn how the rooms have settled into use.
0%
in measured cortisol across post-occupancy studies in our recent health projects.
0km
the maximum distance we will source primary structural material from a project's site.
0%
the typical first-year energy return-to-grid for new Kaern Institute buildings.
"We do not make buildings that ask things of you.
We make buildings that hold you while you decide
what to ask of yourself."
— Kaern Studio Notes
We take on a small number of commissions a year, across all three arms. Tell us the room you are trying to make, and we will tell you whether Kaern is the right hand to make it.
